Five Of The Most Unforgettable 90’s Shows

N ew shows come and go. We like them, and we move on. We like more of them and move on from those, too. However, some timeless classics just can’t be forgotten. Whether it be Mulder and Scully’s iconic duo to Carlton’s hilariously posh shenanigans, nothing can beat the 90’s era in cinema. To keep that spirit alive, let’s talk about five of the most unforgettable 90’s shows and where to find them.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air recounts the story of how Will Smith’s life got flipped, turned upside down after he is sent packing to live with his Auntie and Uncle in Bel-Air. The show followed their lives in weekly episodes, recounting all tales, hilarious, heart-wrenching, and often tear-jerking, that the family goes through. Whether it be Aunt Viv’s iconically strong character, Hilary’s fashion-obsessed antics, or Ashley’s adorable admiration of Will, the characters are flawless and left an imprint in our minds that lives on till today.
You can still watch the whole series on Netflix.
Daria
A cynical comedy revolving around our unlikely protagonist, Daria, and her best friend Jane, the show quickly shot to fame for its biting commentary and Daria’s scathing sarcasm that struck a chord with the 90’s teens. The show keeps the audience hooked and on its toes with its constant sharp and witty writing, its unusual yet equally lovable and relatable main characters, and its constant critique and cynical outlook, a sentiment shared by many of the younger people at the time. The show was the heart and soul of teenage life, the tragedy of it lying in how non-commital MTV was with it, often dropping it for extended periods only to pick it back up just to put it on hold again. If only it got the support it deserved, it would’ve turned into the global phenomenon it deserved to be.
Daria is not fully available on any streaming platform, but you can watch the whole series and its movies on DVD.
Friends
Easily the most popular show to come out of the ’90s is Friends. Friends follow the life of six (Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, and David Schwimmer), you guessed it, Friends, trying to live it out in New York through a series of love affairs, fights, bonding sessions, and more. The show quickly took off, gathering a massive and immediate audience when it began, and now a newer and younger audience garnered through Netflix streaming it. The show is well-loved by both old and young and watched with rapt attention in each household when it comes on. Earlier this year, a Friends Reunion took place where the original cast met up after a good 20 years to film a special.
You can watch the whole series on Netflix.
Frasier
A spin-off of Cheers, Frasier is a show following the life of Dr. Frasier Crane, a psychiatrist turned radio host and his family. The series is easily one of the most critically acclaimed sitcoms of all times, winning a total of 37 Emmys throughout the 11 years in which it aired. Whether it be Frasier’s dry wit, his brother’s high-strung antics, or his father that held them all together with his down-to-earth persona, the show never failed to make us laugh out loud.
The Simpsons
While technically, this doesn’t count as a 90’s show on account of it airing its 32nd season currently, the show certainly did hit its peak in the ’90s. A show that all old and new have grown up watching with timeless characters like Homer, Marge, Lisa, and Bart is sure to be unforgettable now and will be for years to come. Layers upon layers of dry wit, sarcasm, emotional appeals, and rich lore, the show is one of the most well-crafted sitcoms to have ever aired. Some had gone as far as to say it predicted future events when certain happenings rolled out exactly as they did in episodes aired in the ’90s. A true masterpiece, you can find all 32 seasons of the Simpsons on Disney+ and HBO.

And with that, we reach the end of this life of the most unforgettable 90’s shows. Despite only five being listed here, there are so many more shows to look fondly back upon, not just for their brilliant content but for all the memories attached to them. We can only hope to look back on current shows like this in the future, too.
